Tips & Trends

Tips & Trends Spruce up your home by upgrading your accessories. With just a few items, you can totally transform the look of any room in your home.

Foyers are all about first impressions. When guests come through the front door, this is the first place that will make them feel welcome. Your entrance should set the theme for the rest of your home. Interesting accessories such as lighting, area rugs, and artwork are the way to set the tone.

In dining rooms, a large piece of art on a wall or tabletop accessories can dramatically transform the room. A new area rug can change the feel of the whole room. Next to wall color, rugs are the largest piece of color in a room. An 8’x10’ rug should be the minimum size used in most dining rooms to allow for dining chairs to remain on the rug when pulled out for seating.

All around the house a colorful painting or accessory can give new life to a room. Avoid using too many matching woods, metals, patterns, or textures in a single room. The layering of different materials in a room is what gives it depth and interest. When arranging your accessories, remember to think in three’s and five’s; as odd numbers are more visually pleasing than even numbers. If you have a collection of items, group them together for more visual impact. Too many small accessories can give a room a cluttered look, so when adding new accessories, remember to edit out some of your existing pieces.

I suggest leaving your home/room, and then re-enter as a guest with a more critical eye. You will be amazed at the things that you pass by every day that are in need of refreshing, or areas that are lacking color. With accessories, you can transform any room without investing too much money.

Come visit us at Floor to Ceiling and check out our wide variety of accessories.

October Featured Project

Mission With a Flair - This living room, which is based on mission fundamentals, certainly reflects the personal touch of its homeowner. The simple lines of the wood flooring, cabinetry and mosaic tiles are complemented by the soft arch of the fireplace; this lazy arch is repeated in the area rug and furnishings. The color palette; inspired by nature, brings the stunning view of Duluth’s City Harbor inside while maintaining a sense of warm security during Northern Minnesota’s long winter months.

Stay tuned to our website for more on this project.

Green

Most people know that bamboo is considered a “green” product because of its short growth cycle (5 to 7 years to maturity), but some have had concerns about its durability. So, Teragren has introduced a new product called Synergy, which combines the light and dark bamboo fibers fused with an environmentally safe adhesive and then put under extreme pressure. The result is a bamboo floor that is 100% stronger than Red Oak! And for those that like the idea of bamboo but don’t like the look, Synergy offers three different styles that look more like an exotic hardwood than bamboo. Not only is Synergy a “green” product but its durability and beauty make it one of the best floors on the market.

Designer’s Tip

When choosing paint colors, don’t forget to consider any existing wood, flooring, fabric, or other colors that will be in the room. Use warm colors if the room lacks natural light, and consider painting the ceiling the same color as the walls in a small room to make it feel larger. Choose a contrasting paint color to create a focal point, such as a fireplace wall or decorative molding. Once you have your color choices narrowed down it is important to get larger samples of the colors and see how they are affected by natural and artificial light at different times of the day.

From the Manager

Instant interior design! Sometimes the start of school and the impending wall of winter white can be overwhelming! Don’t forget the sanctuary that is our home! Creating an environment that gives a feeling of well-being and comfort can sometimes be the foundation for emotional well-being. It doesn’t have to be a major project! Take a cue from Linda - little things can make the difference! The addition of an area rug or the installation of a new backsplash can change the entire feel of a room. And make you feel good. Of course, if you would like to take on a larger project, a master suite addition, or kitchen remodel, we are here to help make your life easier as well. Remember, it’s your house - make sure that it is also your home.
